Anyone who knows me in real life knows that I am a voracious reader. I am usually not far from a book, and have been known to continue reading wherever I have a spare minute. I recently read a book that is a perfect fit for this blog and I wanted to share it. The book is called The Cure for Writer’s Block by Andrew Mayne. As soon as I saw the title, I knew that I needed to read it as this was the reason for starting the blog.
The first book I read by Andrew Mayne was The Naturalist. As soon as the book was finished I knew I needed to read more from the same author. I was hooked. Unfortunately the second book in The Naturalist series is not due out until later in the month. I searched his amazon page, reading through the titles that he has published. The Cure for Writer’s Block was the proverbial needle in the haystack that I was looking for.
The book opens with a brief explanation on how we are all storytellers in some form. Andrew Mayne demonstrates from childhood to present, we move through our lives telling stories. From our first picture drawn with crayons in our hands to our conversation over dinner about what we did that day; we are the narrator of our own consciousness and need to tap into the stories that we are already telling. Mayne breaks down writer’s block into three related stumbling blocks-Writer’s Blank, Writer’s Lock, and Writer’s Knot.
Writers blank is when you have the yearning to write but cannot seem to have any ideas flow. Writers lock is when you cannot make the connection of getting your great idea out of your head and putting it in writing. Writers knot is when you get stuck while in the middle of your writing. You may know where it needs to go but you have knotted the story and are having trouble around this temporary road block. Andrew Mayne has tips and tricks designed to help you through these varieties of writer's block.
Each chapter is concluded by an assignment that is meant to stimulate your problem solving skills which are based on what you have just read. The book wraps it self up with 50 creativity boosters which can kick your imagination into gear. This is a book that I know I will come back and read frequently.
